Gareth Bale has signed a new contract with Real Madrid that will tie him to the club until June 2022 – meaning only Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo earn more than the Welshman (and even then, only just).

The European champions confirmed the deal – which will see the 27-year-old’s stay at the Santiago Bernabeu reach nine years if the full contract is honoured – on Sunday.

“Real Madrid and Gareth Bale have agreed an extension to the player’s contract, keeping him at the club until the 30th of June 2022,” read the club’s statement.

“Gareth Bale will appear at a press conference in the media room at the Santiago Bernabeu on Monday at 1:30pm.”

And the Telegraph explained where that puts Bale on the food chain, so to speak.

“Messi and Ronaldo earn net salaries of around €21 million (£19 million) while Bale’s earning puts him ahead of Neymar, whose recently signed deal with Barcelona took him to an estimated €17 million (£15 million)”, they report.

Bale signed from Tottenham in what was then a world-record €100million deal in 2013 and won the Champions League in two of his first three years with Madrid.

Much was made of Bale’s financial worth vs Real team-mate Ronaldo’s, but while his transfer fee eclipsed what the club paid Manchester United for CR7, he appears to have consistently remained behind the Portuguese star on the wages front.

Bale, who played in Madrid’s 4-1 win away to Alaves on Saturday, has made 135 Madrid appearances in all competitions and scored 63 goals.

He was this week named among the 30 nominees for the Ballon d’Or.
