SAG Awards was packed with surprises

The awards before the upcoming Academy Awards are adding to the already present hype. As the season got predictable and seemed to offer the same, the Screen Actors Guild Awards were announced to bring back some more drama. The 22nd SAG Awards were not like other awards in terms of laughter quotient, but the tribute to Carol Burnett was quite hilarious. In terms of winners, the award night was full of surprises.

Spotlight gets some Spotlight at the SAG Awards

The only award that is left now before Academy Awards is the Directors Guild Awards. And the recently announced SAG awards have a new buzz around the Oscars. SAGs have clearly stated that the movie “Spotlight” still has a strong chance. The movie has been a best picture front-runner at the Golden Globes competing with “The Martian” and “The Revenant.” “Spotlight” won the award for outstanding cast at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. This win makes it stronger as a nominee at the Oscars alongside “The Revenant” and “The Big Short.” The award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture for “Spotlight” was received by Michael Keaton with Liev Schreiber, Mark Ruffalo, Brian d’Arcy James, and Rachel McAdams.

Looking at the current status, it seems that “The Big Short” and “Spotlight” stand neck-and-neck at the Oscars with very tough competition from “The Revenant” and “The Martian.” The awards for the Best Actress and the Best Actor have been a consistent “Brie and Leo” show, first at the Critics’ Choice Awards and now at the SAGs. Brie Larson won the award for the Best Actress for her outstanding performance in “Room,” and Leonardo DiCaprio took home the Best Actor award for “The Revenant.” The big question still remains, though: “Will Leo take home the Oscar this year, or will the dream remain a dream forever?”

Idris Elba shines at the Screen Actors Guild Awards

The match between Kate Winslet and Alicia Vikander for the Best Supporting Actress awards seems to be a tad one-sided. Vikander has won a Critics’ Choice award in the category and also took home the Screen Actors Guild Awards. Kate Winslet won the award at the Golden Globes, and Vikander seems to have an edge in Oscar voting.

But the award for the Best Supporting Actor can be a surprise. The nominations have been highly peculiar with least possible consensus. Sylvester Stallone was not even nominated at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, even when he won the award in the same category at Golden Globes. He is also nominated for the Academy Awards. Idris Elba was ditched by the Oscars, and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences received a lot of negative commentary for that. Elba won the award at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, plus two awards at the SAGs. The other award was received for his par excellence performance in the quite underrated show by BBC America, “Luther.” The Best Supporting Actor category has some of the stalwarts from the industry, including Christian Bale, Tom Hardy, Sylvester Stallone, and Mark Rylance. This one will be a tough deal for the Oscars.
