Will junk food in schools make a comeback if Chris Christie becomes president?

This U.S. Presidential race is undoubtedly a heated one, and the candidates are trying their level best to up the humor quotient. The new candidate to join the league is New Jersey Governor Chris Christie. His current statement might just snag him a win by a huge margin — if the voting age was 11.

Recently, at an Iowa town hall, Omaha fifth grader Jacob Royal asked Chris Christie, “What are you going to do about the [school] lunches?” As per the Des Moines register, Chris Christie replied (parental guidance advisory), “They were fine when Mrs. Bush was the first lady, but now that Mrs. Obama is the first lady, they have gone down. I don’t care what you’re eating for lunch every day. I really don’t. If I’m President, [you can go] back to whatever you want to eat.” See, that is how you do it. There goes all the effort that has been put in for good health.

Christie fails to impress parents as he tries to lure kids

Well, this non-parental statement will cost him a lot of votes, since kids are not allowed to vote. Do you really think kids should be allowed to make these decisions? It seems like Chris Christie is in favor of returning a range of unhealthy food products. The list is full of fatty foods and includes items like nachos with cheese sauce, fried chips and cheese puffs, sugary soft drinks, French fries, deep fried entrees, and cafeteria-baked Otis Spunkmeyer cookies that are huge in size and in carbohydrates as well. He is also supporting an additional, unnecessary supply of candy, soda, cakes, ice cream, and other non-nutritious junk foods that used to be sold in school vending machines and stores. He basically wants kids to go back to the era prior to when healthy nutrition standards were implemented.

Chris Christie takes a dig at Michelle Obama

If Chris Christie becomes the president, the kids can say goodbye to fruits and vegetables that they have to carry along with their reimbursable school meal. This would also mean doing away with all the salt, fat, and sugar limits. If he achieves his mission, whole grains would also be dumped from school menus. Christie is basically against all the things that were mandated in the Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act that Congress passed in 2010.

What Jacob Royal said was that he misses few items on the school menu. For example, he terribly misses “crispitos,” a type of fried taco. When a fifth grader complains about this, it is acceptable, but a grown man like Chris Christie championing this idea — and telling a child that he doesn’t care what he eats — is unacceptable. He also used this opportunity to take a dig at Michelle Obama and said, “The first lady has no business being involved in this. I think that this intervention into our school system is just another example of how the Obamas believe that they’ve got a better answer for everything than you do.” Well, parents who care about their children’s nutrition will surely not support Christie’s idea.
