Senator John McCain slams Iran over US Navy Sailors detention

United States and Iran avoided a probable diplomatic deadlock when Iran returned US sailors it captured for violating Iranian waters.

While the whole world is terming it one peaceful solution to the issue of Iran capturing US Navy Sailors for entering their water, one US senator is not impressed with the entire situation. Senator John McCain has slammed Iran and the diplomats of both sides for applauding the whole scenario because in his opinion, the US Navy was within its full rights to sail through Iranian waters.

US Sailors were captured by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard on Tuesday but were returned peacefully. The way in which everything has settled into place has received plaudits from peace promoters all over the world. However, there are some people who are not taking this lightly. One of them those people are Senator John McCain, who has slammed Iran for capturing US sailors in the first place.

According to him, it was the right of US Navy to sail into Iranian waters and the talk about it being a diplomatic success is nothing but rubbish. It was being feared that this would turn into a diplomatic battle but US Secretary of State John Kerry and Mohammad JavadZarif made sure that the situation does not turn into that. Both sides acted responsibly this time around and the issue was then settled peacefully.

However, John McCain, who is also the Senate Armed Forces Committee, is of the view that Iran should not have captured US sailors in the first place. While reflecting on the incident, he said that the administration is wrong to take this issue as it nothing has gone wrong.

“The Administration is pretending as if nothing out of the ordinary has occurred. Vice President Joe Biden described the incident as ‘standard nautical practice.’ That assertion is patently false,” McCain said in a statement.

He added that this is not what international law tells us.

“What’s worse, by failing to affirm basic principles of international law, it places our Navy and Coast Guard vessels and the men and women who sail them at increased risk in the future.”

While the Democrats have argued that the return of sailor in such a short time is the victory for both sides. It is the win of diplomacy and that has been the case only because Iran and Tehran now enjoys better relationship.

McCain said that the claims that Iranian Nuclear deal has played a part in the return of these sailors is nothing more than a comforting lie.

“Furthermore, the suggestion by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and others that the Iranian nuclear deal somehow aided in these sailors’ return is ludicrous,” he said, according to Breaking Defense, a military commentary website.

Secretary of State John Kerry affirmed that the US sailors were taken into custody but were given full respect and were well taken care of. They were given food, blanket and were assisted all the way in their return to the fleet.
